The City Cafe | Murfreesboro Dining

The City Café, a Meat and Three, located just off the square, and has been in business for over 100 years.

The City Cafe was opened  in 1900 by Dorsey Cantrell in downtown Murfreesboro.   The City Cafe is known for its history, good food, friendly locals, and great environment.  The cafe experienced a ownership change back in 2007 with new owner Scott Perkins taking over in September.

The City Cafe is a relaxed environment and is really just as much a meeting place as a restaurant.  You will immediately notice the history of the city cafe once you go inside.  You’ll see picture filled walls of previous owners, old photographs of other local business owners, as well as old time decor.  The décor brings back memories of 1950’s diners and simpler times.  The City Cafe has held political parties for the regulars every election year, along with various other societies in the community.

As for the food, expect your eggs to be cooked to order with biscuits and country ham at breakfast. Count on one of the area’s best cheeseburgers at lunch. And enjoy comforting plates of fried or barbecued chicken, salmon croquettes, liver and onions, and roast beef and gravy at lunch and dinner, with yeast rolls, corn cakes and locally raised vegetables on the side.  The menu changes daily which keeps customers coming back.  The City Cafe  serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

Bluegrass music jam sessions are a late Saturday morning happening.   Every town has a morning “coffee spot” where the local gather to discuss the great issues of our time, the day’s events and gossip. City Cafe has outlasted a number of competitors and is the place for a solid meal and as much of the local gossip as you want.  The community table is a great source of commentary and news.

The City Café has the look and feel of “mom and pop” diners throughout the South, but the main difference with the City Cafe is that regardless of how long they have been in business, more and more new customers flow in and help keep the community circle intact.

Demos' Restaurant – Murfreesboro, Tennessee 37129

March 29, 2010 1 comment

Demos’ Restaurant – Murfreesboro

1940s. Operating restaurants has been a Demos family tradition since the 1940s.In 1943 at the age of 9, Jim Demos began working with his father Pete Demos, a Greek immigrant who owned a small restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama. Jim and his father were at times the only two employees, so Jim learned early about working hard in the restaurant business. Jim worked with his father until he was 17 years old. From that time until 1972, Jim had graduated from college, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, worked in the motion picture theater business and was married.1930s. Before opening a restaurant, the
Demos brothers polished their customer
service skills in the confectionary business. From 1972 until 1989, Jim built and operated eight franchised restaurants and a commissary in the Nashville area. Then Jim sold all of his restaurants and moved to Murfreesboro to start a new restaurant concept.Jim and wife Doris had a vision of a restaurant that would offer very affordable, unique entrees made with family recipes and service exceeding customer expectations. Recipes would be made from scratch, with all steaks USDA choice and hand-cut on the premises.1944. At age 9, Jim Demos began working
with his father Pete (behind the counter)
in the family restaurant.

Jim and Doris also had a vision of operating the restaurant without the usual corporate systems, which they felt sometimes made it difficult to consistently assure every single customer had a great dining experience.

Jim and Doris opened the first Demos’ Steak & Spaghetti House in 1989 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Jim refined the kitchen operations, menu and recipes. Doris developed almost all of the front of the house service systems that are still in place today and are considered to be some of the most innovative in the industry.

1982. Another generation of the Demos
family, 12-year-old Peter, got his start
in the business as a dishwasher.

The success and recognition of the Murfreesboro restaurant prompted the opening of the second Demos’ in 1992 in downtown Nashville, a third location in Lebanon in 2001, a fourth location in Hendersonville in February 2005 and a fifth location in Florence, Alabama in 2009.

That success and incredible sales growth has continued with our restaurants’ winning awards year after year for food quality and service.

Toot’s Murfreesboro!

Since 1985, Toot’s Restaurants have been serving up good food and fun to millions of hungry customers. Each of our four locations are a favorite place to meet up with friends and have a great time – at Toot’s the fun never ends!

Our History at Murfreesboro, TN

The original Toot’s location in Murfreesboro, Tennessee opened its doors on October 29th, 1985, making it the oldest full-service restaurant in Rutherford County.

Toot’s introduced Buffalo Wings to the Middle Tennessee area (they were only 10¢ apiece at the time!).

The original Toot’s restaurant was the location for several memorable events during this time. Two people who had met at Toot’s decided to have their wedding on the bar at Toot’s in 1988. Famed D.J. Wolfman Jack was given the key to the city of Murfreesboro on the bar at Toot’s in 1991.

A portion of the original “Are you ready for some football?” Monday Night Football opening routine was filmed at Toot’s in 1992, and the Jukebox that was used now hangs in the dining room.

Hours of Operation
Mon – Thurs: 11AM – 11PM
Fri – Sat: 11AM – Midnight
Sun: 11AM – 10PM
